Preparation

To cut any roof insulation for flat and pitched roofs does require a certain amount of preparation. Mostly, the roofer will create something like a gradient insulation plan according to the blueprints provided by the architect. He will determine the draining points, cut-outs for light domes, where the rain water gutters will go and many other details related to the entire roof layout. Here, professionals will use specific software programs like DachDesigner and Dämmplan (German roof insulation planning software). These will create a graphic gradient plan (see example image) as well as a very precise plan for the relevant insulation pieces, the sizes down to the millimeter, and where they will go. The program will also create the sales and physical building data. The parts list can then be imported directly into our multiRoof Software (see below).

Which CNC machine is best for you?


CUT2900S for slope panel cutting

The more you know your very own requirements, the easier your choice will be to pick out the perfect CNC machine for your roof insulation. The right decision will be rewarded with the best quality of your work and productivity. The first question you should ask yourself is, what your priorities are.

Do you want to produce roof insulation made from Styrofoam (EPS), Neopor or Styrodur (XPS) or mineral wool (fiberglass, rock wool, slag wool)? If you prefer to work with hard foam, the hot wire cutting machine would work best. To cut any type of mineral wool and condensable foam, a cold wire cutting machine is the better choice (quick-wire cutting machine).

Will you manufacture predominantly smaller insulation panels and insulation elements? A machine with a lower portal height and smaller working table is more than sufficient.

However, if you are planning on producing larger batches of EPS or XPS insulation panels, a Blockslicer would be the right choice. With its ten or even twenty wires you can cut many panels in just one single step. The independent y-axes also make angled cuts for pitched roofs possible, as well as ridge and valley panels made from a single piece.

Wire length and type of machine


The maximum wire length of 1,300 mm is perfect for the cutting of most sloped slabs, ridge panels, groin panels, roof ridges and insulation wedges. The maximum height/width of the standard boards and Styrofoam blocks is usually 1,250 mm. Therefore machines with shorter wires should be able to fit larger insulation boards. Styrofoam panels and blocks

Styropor® (EPS)
white

Expanding Polystyrene (EPS) is also known as Styrofoam or Styropor®. The rights to this trademark are owned by BASF. The white material is available in boards or large blocks. The boards come in a thickness of up to 300 mm and with the standard dimensions of 1,000 x 500 mm. Styrofoam blocks usually come in the standard size of 1,250 x 1,050 mm, but can be up to 5,000 mm long. EPS is ideal for the manufacturing of crown molding and decorative façade elements. We recommend material with a volumetric weight of 30-40 kg/m3. According to the European Standard Norm (European classification EN), Styropor® is classified as fire-resistant material.

Die BASF-Marke Neopor® steht für einen silbergrauen Schaum aus expandierbarem Polystyrol (EPS). Partikel aus Grafit geben dem Werkstoff seine typische Farbe. Der Grafit streut und absorbiert Wärmestrahlung. Deshalb eignet sich Neopor besonders gut als Dämmstoff. Sie erhalten das Material in Platten oder Blöcken von 1.000 x 500 mm bis zu einer Stärke von 300 mm. Da Neopor um bis zu 20 % besser dämmt als Styropor, eignet es sich vornehmlich für die Boden-, Decken-, Innen- und Außendämmung sowie für Schalungen. Mit Stuckelemente aus Neopor vermeiden Sie sogenannte "Kältebrücken", die Wärme schneller entweichen lassen. Neopor erfüllt die Kriterien für den Brandschutz nach Baustoffklasse B1 (Euroklasse E).

Since roof insulation is part of a growing trend, more and more insulation material alternatives for Styrofoam, Neopor and Styrodur are becoming available on the market. Mineral wool such as rock wool and fiberglass are increasingly popular. Other alternatives include wood fiber and mineral insulation boards, cellulose, PUR hard foam, foam glass panels as well as cellular glass ballast and perlite granules. flame retardant HBCD

In the past, roof insulation made of Styrofoam (EPS) and Styrodur (XPS) ended up in the news headlines. Not because crude oil is the raw material to manufacture these polystyrenes. The focus was rather the flame retardant HBCD (hexabromocyclododecane) that was contained within these insulation foams. Some waste incinerator plants did no longer accept old Styrofoam insulation. The reason was quite obvious: HBCD is produced with bromine, which could be hazardous to human and animal health. It has been proven that the chemical will only degrade very slowly in the environment. However, according to the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) it has now been established that HBCD-containing insulation boards pose no health risks for the residents in these houses, where this type of insulation has been used.

Largely unnoticed by the public, the polystyrene industry has responded to criticism from environmentalists. Manufacturers have stopped adding brominated flame retardant to insulation foams in 2014. The Styrofoam that is currently available can be safely disposed of. However, it still very much seems that the press and media prefers to broadcast prophecies of doom rather than good news. Hence the reason as to why the changing trend in the use of EPS and XPS polystyrene foams has hardly hit the news or headlines.
