We have been developing and building CNC machines in Ilmenau since 2007. Our experience from ten years of running our own rigid-foam production business informs our machine development, software and customer advice.
cnc-multitool develops and manufactures CNC hot wire cutting machines, CNC fastwire cutting machines and CNC milling machines in Ilmenau, Thuringia. Our machines are assembled, adjusted and tested in Germany before delivery.
For more than ten years, we processed EPS foam and other foams ourselves – from CNC cutting and milling to coating and painting. We know materials, machines and complete production workflows from daily hands-on experience.
This experience is reflected in our machines, our CAM software styroCAM and the advice we give our customers. We combine machine engineering, application engineering and manufacturing expertise.
For more than ten years, we operated our own EPS foam and foam production business. We carried out nearly every production step ourselves: CNC cutting, milling, coating and painting – from raw material to finished component. Our machines were also used to make large-scale 3D objects, props and advertising displays.
We understand different materials, their processing characteristics and the demands of day-to-day production. We used and tested our machines in our own factory and continuously improved them based on that experience.
Running our own production operation also taught us that a technically sound CNC machine is not enough. What matters is how easy it is to actually manufacture parts with it every day. That includes both operating the machine and preparing cutting programs.
In our view, the CAM solutions then available for CNC wire cutting did not meet the needs of a working EPS production facility. That is why we began developing our own software, styroCAM .
An example from our factory: if we needed to increase the size of a letter from 200 to 234 mm, we did not want to calculate a scaling factor first. We simply wanted to enter the desired size. Likewise, when cutting with a horizontal wire, the software should account for how the cutting direction affects the part's support and dimensional accuracy – without forcing the operator to make unnecessary decisions.
We deliberately left out specialist functions that are rarely needed. This approach continues to shape our machine development and our application engineering and production consulting .
What began in 2007 with a hot wire cutting machine we developed ourselves grew in response to customer requests and the needs of our own foam production business. Machines, recycling equipment and our styroCAM software all originated from real manufacturing tasks.
Our first machine, the ST600S, grew out of a wish to cut a wing from EPS foam. It had four CNC axes, a 600 × 400 mm working area and a 600 mm wire length. After extensive development work, we were able to offer it as a kit for €999. Customers soon began asking for larger versions.
We developed the first CUT3200S for our own EPS foam production. Later, our factory operated four CUT1600S machines for XPS, two CUT3200S machines and one CUT4225S for EPS blocks. The large volume of offcuts led us to develop our EPS recycler, now known as the SHD2000S.
We expanded our product range to include CNC fastwire cutting machines. Alongside thermal cutting, we developed additional cutting processes for materials and applications that cannot be processed with a hot wire.
Today, we develop, assemble and test CNC hot wire and fastwire cutting machines, CNC milling machines and other material-processing solutions in Ilmenau. Our styroCAM CAM software and ten years of first-hand production experience are integral to our work.
What started as a small machine for model making has grown into a broad range of CNC machines. Our photographs trace the journey from our beginnings through our own production operation to our current manufacturing facility in Ilmenau.
It all started with a wish to cut a wing from EPS foam. When we looked at the CNC hot wire cutting machines available at the time, we asked ourselves: Why do these machines have to be so expensive?
So we decided to develop our own compact four-axis machine. That turned out to be much harder than we had initially thought. After many trials and a great deal of development work, the first ST600S was finally ready, with a 600 × 400 mm working area and a 600 mm wire length, designed especially for model-aircraft fuselages and wings.
Once the machine worked and we were happy with it, we thought: Maybe other people will like it too. We offered it as a kit for €999 – exactly the price we had set out to achieve.
The response was positive. More and more customers asked whether we could build larger machines. Those requests led to our first larger CNC hot wire cutting machines.
As we established our own EPS foam and foam production facility, our machines became everyday working tools. We made a wide variety of products: three-dimensional objects, benches, props, advertising displays and countless letters – from small XPS letters to large EPS shapes.
At various times, our production facility operated four CUT1600S machines for XPS cutting, two CUT3200S machines and one CUT4225S for EPS blocks. We did not just cut material: we also milled, coated and painted it. This gave us first-hand knowledge of materials, processing methods and daily production workflows.
Our own production showed us what works in practice – and what does not. Cutting generated large quantities of EPS offcuts. Rather than accept the problem, we developed our own EPS recycler, the predecessor of today's SHD2000S.
We also experimented extensively with coatings. We applied our first polyurethane coatings using a small Graco E10. Sometimes cleaning the equipment afterwards took longer than the actual spraying. We later worked with a Graco XP2 and tested numerous materials and products from different manufacturers. Not every trial succeeded, but we learned a great deal from the experience.
Today, we develop, manufacture, assemble, configure and test CNC machines for a wide range of applications in Ilmenau. Our product range includes CNC hot wire and fastwire cutting machines, CNC milling machines, coating systems and EPS recycling machines.
Over the years, the size of our facility and the diversity of our machines have changed. What has remained is our commitment to developing solutions grounded in practical experience. What we learned in our own factory continues to guide design, assembly, final testing and customer advice.
We combine machine engineering, application engineering and manufacturing expertise and know from experience what matters when it comes to materials, processing methods and day-to-day production workflows.
To us, software is the brain of a CNC machine. It plays a decisive role in how easily, flexibly and economically a machine can be used in day-to-day production.
In our own factory, we found that the CAM solutions then available for CNC wire cutting did not meet our needs. That is why we started developing our own CAM software, styroCAM – designed around the people who work with it in production every day.
When customers visit us to see our machines, we often say: “Don't just look at the machine. Above all, look at the software.” A CNC hot wire cutting machine essentially moves a heated wire through material. The real challenge is turning a drawing into a finished part as quickly and easily as possible.
Cumbersome software wastes working time in production. Even a few extra minutes spent preparing each job add up to substantial costs over weeks and months.
Our aim was never to create the software with the longest list of features. We wanted a tool that is intuitive to use and gives operators the freedom they need. We deliberately chose not to focus on specialist features that only a few users require. Why burden 95% of users with functions that only 5% need? This reflects our development philosophy, not a statistically measured market split.
We demonstrate just how seriously we take ease of use during customer demonstrations: “Want to bet that after 30 minutes you'll say: Thanks, I've understood everything?” Today, introducing a customer to styroCAM takes us around half an hour. Why would we develop software that requires days of customer training?
Our guiding principle is: “As good as necessary, not as elaborate as possible.” This does not mean compromising on quality; it means avoiding unnecessary complexity. We develop solutions that do exactly what is needed in practice.
We see the automation of complete manufacturing applications as a key direction for the future.
Beyond styroCAM, we develop custom automation software and machine plug-ins for parametric workflowsfor our customers. These make it possible to create or adapt parts based on specified parameters and automate recurring manufacturing tasks.
Our goal is not merely to automate individual machine movements, but to make the entire process – from part creation and program generation through to machining – as simple and efficient as possible.
We combine machine engineering and software development with our knowledge of application engineering and more than ten years of running our own production facility. The result is solutions tailored to real manufacturing workflows, not just technical specifications.
Coating our own EPS components was part of our daily production for many years. We looked for materials and application systems that delivered good results while also being economical and reliable. We tested different equipment, coating products and manufacturers – and learned some costly lessons along the way.
While searching for another coating system, we discovered Speedliner and began using it ourselves. Because we processed large quantities of the material in our own production facility, we were eventually asked whether we would take on distribution in Germany.
Our distribution activities in Germany eventually grew into Speedliner distribution throughout Europe. Today, this business is run by our second company, Hartschaumzuschnitte-Ilmenau GmbH, which previously operated our foam production facility.
Speedliner coatings have many applications – including art, model making and exhibition stand construction, as well as technical components and construction projects. Depending on the material and requirements, they can complement CNC processing with a suitable surface coating. Find details of the available products in our Speedliner shop.
