4-axis CNC hot wire cutting machine for model making, samples and signage – Draw. Cut. Done.
The CUT1600S is a CNC hot wire cutting machine for anyone who wants to cut sheets of EPS, XPS and EPP themselves and flexibly – without outsourcing a single cut.
Whether model making and drone wings, samples and prototypes, lettering and logos or profiles and sheets: you produce your parts in your own workshop, exactly when you need them.
With four CNC axes you cut straight, tapered and independent 4-axis contours with a single cutting wire – from a simple 2D contour to a form that differs on both sides.
You can choose between the CUT1610S with a fixed machine table and the CUT1610SV with an adjustable table and adjustable wire length.
The CUT1600S is mainly used in workshops, model making and signage. From EPS, XPS and EPP sheets you can produce, for example:
Contour-cut lettering and logos from XPS for advertising, exhibition and shop fitting.
Individual parts, samples and prototypes from EPS, XPS and EPP for development and sampling.
Wings and components from EPP for model flying and drones – including tapered and independent 4-axis contours.
The CUT1600S processes EPS, XPS and EPP sheets. EPS (Styrofoam) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) are suitable for profiles, contours, lettering, logos and models. EPP is processed up to a density of around 40 kg/m³ and is suitable, among other things, for model making, wings and packaging.
On the CUT1600S, EPS, XPS and EPP are mainly processed as sheets and can be trimmed, cut to the required thickness and further processed into 2D or independent 4-axis contours.
In addition, small EPS blocks can also be held and processed on the CUT1600S. The maximum material dimensions are approximately 1,250 × 1,250 × 600 mm (L × W × H).
Depending on the desired cut, you process your material lying flat or standing upright on the machine table.
Sheets and small EPS blocks are placed flat on the machine table, aligned and cut precisely with the CNC-controlled cutting wire.
This produces profiles, lettering, contours and other individual 2D cuts from EPS, XPS and EPP.
Hot wire cutting works without force: the cutting wire does not touch the material but melts its way through. The material cannot be displaced and does not need to be fixed.
Sheets can also be positioned vertically on the machine table. This allows the same contour to be cut from several sheets in one operation.
Because cutting is force-free, sheets from around 2 cm thickness can stand on their own and usually do not need to be fixed.
Practical tip: for thinner sheets, a small piece of double-sided tape between the table and the sheet holds it reliably – that's all it takes.
This method is particularly suitable for series cuts of identical parts.
The CUT1610S and the CUT1610SV work on the same principle. The difference is the machine table: fixed on the CUT1610S (wire length 1,250 mm), adjustable on the CUT1610SV. With the adjustable table you match the wire length (450–1,250 mm) to the width of your part.
This is a particular advantage for short, strongly skewed parts such as wings: a shorter wire stays tauter, follows the contour more precisely and makes cuts possible that are not achievable with a long wire. When cutting XPS, the short wire also ensures clean cuts without waves.

The actual cutting speed depends on the material and material density.
For EPS, typical cutting speeds are around 400–650 mm/min, and for XPS and EPP around 350–400 mm/min.
With hot wire cutting, the limiting factor is primarily the cutting wire and the material – not the machine: the heated wire melts its way through the material without touching it mechanically.
The CUT1600S uses our TiTA64 cutting wire (0.35 or 0.40 mm) – specially developed for hot wire cutting and resistant to heat and tearing.
Tension springs compensate for the change in length as the wire heats up and keep it taut. There are hard springs for parallel and soft springs for independent cuts (with a change in wire length).
The cutting wire and springs are wear parts and can be reordered directly from us when needed.
Operating the CUT1600S is deliberately kept simple – even without CNC experience.
The process is always the same: you create a drawing, convert it into a machine program and start the cutting process. The machine then carries out the actual cutting on its own.
If a cut isn't right the first time, you simply correct the drawing and cut again – without any complex reprogramming on the machine.
No special CNC programming knowledge is required, and new employees learn to use it in a short time.
The CUT1600S uses three software components – a drawing, a CAM and the machine software. Which drawing and CAM software you use is up to you.
Contours, profiles, lettering and individual geometries are created in a vector or CAD software. For free 2D contours we recommend CorelDRAW, and for dimensionally accurate drawings any suitable 2D or 3D CAD software. Suitable formats are DXF, DWG and PLT.
A CAM software converts the drawing into a machine program (ISO G-code) for 2D and 4-axis cuts. Our own is styroCAM.
The finished ISO G-code program is loaded into the machine software and transferred via the USB controller to the 4-axis CNC control. As machine software we use Mach3; it is part of the required USB machine software package but is not included in the basic scope of the machine itself. You are free to choose and can also use any other suitable machine software.

The CUT1600S has a deliberately simple design: important parts are easily accessible and can be replaced yourself after a short set of instructions. We keep the required spare parts in stock and ship them at short notice.
The CUT1600S has a simple design and is intended for cutting sheets and smaller parts. Four CNC axes and a single cutting wire are enough for straight, tapered and independent 4-axis contours.
The CUT1610S comes as standard with a fixed machine table with a top plate.
The table provides a defined support surface for sheets and small EPS blocks and allows the material to be positioned easily within the machine's working area.
The fixed machine width results in a cutting wire length of 1,250 mm.
The CUT1610SV comes as standard with an adjustable machine table.
The distance between the two machine sides can be changed. This allows the cutting wire length to be flexibly adjusted between 450 and 1,250 mm to suit different sheet widths, small Styrofoam blocks and cutting tasks.
The CUT1610SV also comes with an arm support as standard.
The CUT1610S and CUT1610SV have four CNC-controlled cutting axes. The two ends of the cutting wire can move in parallel or independently of each other.
With parallel movement, classic 2D contours and straight cuts are produced. With independent axis movement, different contours on both sides of the sheet or block can be connected to each other.
This also makes tapered and independent 4-axis cuts possible.
The cutting wire is held between the cutting arms by mechanical spring tension.
The cutting wire can be hooked in and out without tools. Depending on the type of cut, different springs are used:
4-axis CNC control: it controls the machine; the CNC cutting programs are transferred and executed via the Windows PC. With the optional relay box, the cutting wire can also be switched on and off directly via the machine software.
Power supply with automatic current control: it supplies the cutting wire with the required power and keeps the heating output as constant as possible even when the wire length changes.

The CUT1610S and CUT1610SV are assembled, adjusted and function-tested at our factory and delivered in transport-optimised assemblies. On site, only the machine table needs to be assembled, the machine aligned and the electronics connected.
The USB software package connects the Windows PC to the CNC control and runs the cutting programs.
It includes the Mach3 machine software and the USB controller, set up for operating the 4-axis hot wire cutting machine.
Creating the cutting programs requires a CAM software. We offer our styroCAM for this.
A Windows PC is required for operation. Optionally, we supply the CUT1600S with a ready-prepared computer package.
It includes a Windows PC, monitor, keyboard and mouse; the machine software is already installed and configured.
The CUT1600S can be adapted to your workplace and application with additional equipment.
The optional relay box is connected to the machine control and switches the cutting wire on and off automatically via a software command.
This allows switching the cutting wire on and off to be integrated directly into the program sequence.
With the optional work console, the monitor, keyboard and mouse are positioned directly at the machine.
In addition, the machine control and power supply can be integrated into the work console. This creates a compact and tidy machine workplace.
Cutting wire is a consumable and can be changed quickly and without tools when needed.
The wire costs around €1 per metre and has a very long service life in normal operation. In our experience, many CUT1610S customers use less than 100 metres of cutting wire per year.
Replacement takes about 2 minutes. Spare wire and matching springs are available as accessories.
The CUT1610S can be equipped with a closed machine enclosure.
The enclosure surrounds the working area and can be combined with an extraction connection through which any fumes are drawn out of the machine area in a targeted way.
Transparent doors still allow a good view of the cutting process and easy access to the working area.
The CUT1600S is designed for self-assembly – anyone can do it, and no special prior knowledge is needed.
You only need to assemble the machine table and connect the control and computer. Everything else is plug and play.
A video shows the complete setup step by step. If you have questions, we additionally support you by phone or remote support.
The CUT1600S cuts EPS, XPS and EPP.
You can obtain the right material directly from us. Alternatively, we are happy to name a suitable supplier near you.
The hot wire melts its way through the material and seals the edge smoothly at the same time. As a rule, no rework is needed – the parts are ready to use.
The cutting gap (kerf) is around 1-2 mm and can be influenced via the wire temperature – you set this on the machine yourself. In the CAM software you specify the desired gap, and the software compensates for it automatically so that your parts stay dimensionally accurate.
Hot wire cutting produces no dust – the material is melted, not sawn.
Almost silent. At most you hear the quiet hum of the axis drives – the cutting process itself is practically silent.
Yes. The left and right axis units can be controlled independently of each other, so that the wire follows different contours at each end – this creates tapered and independent 4-axis forms such as wings. Freely modelled 3D surfaces as with milling are, however, not possible with hot wire.
Yes. You arrange several parts in one drawing and cut them one after another in a single program. You can also place several sheets side by side and cut them together – this saves time and makes optimal use of the working area.
No. Anyone who can draw a contour on a computer will get on with the CUT1600S – the path from drawing to finished cut is deliberately kept simple.
Very little. The cutting wire and tension springs are the main wear parts. The axes run on spindle drives that should be greased from time to time – beyond that, the machine needs no special care.
Yes. Wear parts such as cutting wire and springs, as well as all spare parts, are available directly from us at any time.
Slight fumes can be produced when cutting. Depending on the material, room size and duration of use, adequate ventilation is therefore required. If you cannot ensure this, you can order the machine optionally with an enclosure and extraction connection – this is only available together with the machine and cannot be retrofitted.
The wire has a long service life; how often it is replaced depends on the material and usage. Replacing it takes just a few simple steps.
It is designed for the workshop, model making and sample making – ideal for individual parts and small batches. For continuous series production of large quantities, our larger series are the better choice.
