DXF is simple - if you know the most common mistakes. How to make DXF files clean and importable.
DXF is the universal exchange format for CAD data and the standard for CNC hot wire cutting. Almost every CAD program can export DXF - but not every DXF file is equally good. Poor DXF files are the most common cause of import problems and poor cut results.
DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format - a format developed by Autodesk for exchanging CAD data. A DXF file contains geometric data: lines, arcs, circles and curves. No images, no photos, no greyscale. styroCAM reads this geometric data and converts it into machine commands.
Before the DXF export, check in the CAD program: Are all contours closed? Are there duplicate elements? Are splines converted into lines? Are the units set to millimetres? Many CAD programs have automatic checking functions - use these before export. A clean DXF export saves time during import and prevents production problems.
The key questions and answers on this topic.
The most common reason: open contours. All contours must be completely closed. Other causes: splines instead of lines and arcs, wrong units or duplicate elements.
DXF AutoCAD 2000 or 2004 work most reliably. Newer DXF versions can sometimes cause compatibility problems.
In the CAD program, select the contour and check whether it is recognised as a closed element. Many programs highlight open ends in colour. Alternatively, let styroCAM import it - it shows import errors.
