What Does Variable Wire Length Mean?

With most hot wire machines wire length is fixed – it corresponds to the distance between the two cutting arms. Variable wire length means: this distance is adjustable. The machine can work with short wire lengths for small workpieces – and be adjusted to longer wire lengths when larger blocks need to be cut. All on one machine. cnc-multitool offers two machines with variable wire length: the CUT2500S and the CUT3500SV – with different application ranges.

CUT2500S – Variable Wire Length up to 2500 mm

The CUT2500S offers variable wire lengths from 500 mm to 2500 mm – optimal for EPS and XPS standard formats. The X travel is 1250 mm, meaning the block length on the machine table is a maximum of 1250 mm. Rotating the block 90° is not possible with this machine – the block is cut exclusively from the wire side. For most EPS and XPS applications this is perfectly sufficient.

CUT3500SV – Variable Wire Length up to 5100 mm

The CUT3500SV is designed for very large blocks of 4 to 5 m. It enables variable wire lengths from 850 mm to 5100 mm – manually adjustable or optionally via automatic CNC-controlled portal adjustment to millimetre precision via software. The key difference from the CUT2500S: the X travel equals the wire length. This means the block can be rotated 90° and is then also completely cuttable – from all sides.

When Does Variable Wire Length Make Sense?

When Does Variable Wire Length Not Make Sense?

Variable wire length is not for everyone. Anyone who always needs the same wire length – for example always EPS standard blocks of the same size – is often better served by a machine with a fixed wire length. It is simpler, cheaper and lower maintenance. Variable wire length only pays off when the flexibility is genuinely needed on a regular basis.

Automatic Portal Adjustment (CUT3500SV)

The optional automatic portal adjustment of the CUT3500SV sets the machine table – and therefore the wire length – CNC-controlled to millimetre precision via software. No manual adjustment, no measuring, no tools. The desired wire length is entered in the software and the machine adjusts itself. This saves time when formats change frequently.

Recommendation: Always Work Short in Daily Use

Even with a variable machine, daily use should always be with the shortest possible wire length. Short wires produce better quality, allow higher speeds and react more stably. The long wire length is for exceptional cases – not for daily production. Variable wire length is not a licence for unnecessarily long wires.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is variable wire length?

Variable wire length means the distance between the cutting arms is adjustable. The machine can work with short wire lengths for small workpieces and be switched to longer wire lengths when larger blocks need to be cut.

What is the difference between CUT2500S and CUT3500SV?

The CUT2500S offers variable wire lengths from 500 to 2500 mm with an X travel of 1250 mm – optimal for EPS and XPS standard formats, block cannot be rotated. The CUT3500SV offers 850 to 5100 mm wire length, X travel equals the wire length – the block can be rotated 90° and cut completely from all sides. For very large blocks of 4–5 m.

When does a machine with variable wire length make sense?

Variable wire length makes sense when very different workpiece formats are regularly processed. Anyone who always needs the same wire length is often better served by a fixed machine – simpler, cheaper, lower maintenance.

What is automatic portal adjustment?

The automatic portal adjustment (option on the CUT3500SV) sets the machine table CNC-controlled to millimetre precision via software. The desired wire length is entered and the machine adjusts itself – no manual adjustment needed.
